Cultures and Wars
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: With passion one can learn to solve many problems. Wars of 21st century cant be won by posturing on moral and ethical high grounds presented by Rajiv Malhotra in Gita on Fighting Terrorism. Passion and an appeal to a brand of moral and ethical high grounds are not sufficient for victory against a determined enemy. For a winning strategy in todays global environment a nation must have necessary second-to-none economic and military power to confront any enemy, a realistic strategy based on current.....read more in: Cultures and Wars

S.Ghosh Sunday, June 01, 2008, 21:40 What is your basis for claiming and I quote, "There might be some tribal religions among the Beduin and other tribes but those were minor." Minor is a relative term.... It took several hundred years before most Greeks and Romans converted to Christianity as a result of political pressure. Until then they remained "pagans." Africa was mostly tribal. Romans tried and failed to penetrate deep into Africa. Even some converted "Christian Jews" refused to tow the Greco-Roman edict of following the state sponsored church and continue to practice traditional Jews practices - Torah and Talmud - with some Christian teachings. I agree with you that religion by itself is not responsible for religious wars. My point is that with each religion there is a political religion such as political Islam or political Christianity of Greco-Romans and Catholic Church, etc. Wars are a result of political action. Until recently religion was used as an excuse for extra territorial expansions by Christians and Muslims. It is therefore important to separate state from religion. Since 20th century many secular democratic states have recognized that they do not have to go to war to enjoy economic prosperity. Military power without a strong economic power is most likely to result in a failed state, e.g., Pakistan.
4 S.Ghosh on Sunday, June 01, 2008 :

The books and films you have mentioned are not historical documents but fictions. Christianity was born about 350 years before it became the official religion first in Armenia and then in the Romam Empire, both Eastern and Western. According to history, the major civilizations in the Middle East or Near East before Christianity became the official religion was Greek, Zorastrian, Judaism. When Christianity became the official religion other religions got to suffer. There might be some tribal religions among the Beduin and other tribes but those were minor. However, India had the same history when Buddhism became the official religion in about 300BC, but then Hinduism became the official religion in 2nd century AD, then again during the Pala dynasty, Buddhism became the official religion. There were many inccidents of violent clashes between Hindus and Buddhist or between Saivas and Vanishnavs in India between 3rd century Bc and 12 th century AD. One cannot blame either Buddism or Hinduism for that. Similarly there were a lot of violence between the Christians and the followers of Judaism and Greek-Zoastrian religions and between the Catholics and Protestants and Orthodox. One cannot blame the religions for that.

S.Ghosh Monday, May 19, 2008, 01:13 As I said in my previous comment #2, the dates for Constantine should be 4th century not 6th and that for Augustine it should be 5th century, not 4th. My bad. Although error is regretted it does not take away from central points made in the essay. There were pagans and tribals during 7th century in addition to Zoroastrians, Romans, Greeks, etc in what is known today as Middle East and Africa. Greco-Romans were very active in the area. Mohammad was born into an Arab tribal family and temple of Abraham, today"s Mekkah used to house idols placed there by tribals for worshiping. Tribal and pagan wars were common in those days. Romans were into extra territorial expansion mode in the area and Constantine converted to Christianity once he became Roman Emperor. Constantine was born on a Greek Island; Greece in those days was spread across 1000+ islands and around 500 BC it was invaded and occupied by Turks and Zoroastrians. Greece as a nation came together after 1822 when allied forces defeated Turks and ended Turkish occupation of Greece. Today Greece is a nation with more than 1000 islands. I find some of entries on the Wikipedia questionable, so interested person should go to primary sources. I just finished watching a movie, Constantine"s Sword, based on James Carroll"s 700+ page book by the same name. For those interested in Cultures and Wars of the time I suggest first watch the movie Constantine"s Sword, whcih cover two thousand years of terrorism by Christian, both the Church and States, though they call it by different names to whitewash history. Then watch a documentary Fitna, which runs for 16 minutes. For the link to Fitna just search "Fitna" on the Google search engine, it is easy. Any objective person should be able to see parallel between hate and intolerance preached by both Christian Church and Islam. S/he should also notice why Jews have been the victims of prosecution by these two religions for last two thousand years. For those interested in knowing more details of history of Christianity I strongly recommend reading the book, Constantine"s Sword and also a book by A.J. Heschel, God in Search of Man, which presents Judaism and philosophy behind it. I hope this clarifies comments by Mr. Ghose.

S.Ghosh 01:13 Thanks, I will check facts you listed and correct if necessary. Wikipedia confirms dates about Constantine I. I need more time to check others.
1 S.Ghosh on Monday, May 19, 2008 :

The article has a lot of factual errors: 1) Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus, commonly known as Constantine I, Constantine the Great (among Roman Catholics), or Saint Constantine (among Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic Christians), was Roman Emperor from 306, not in 6th century. 2) When Islam was created in the 7th century the most important religion in the Middle East was Zorastrian, as most of the Middle East was in the Persian Empire, only the coastal states ( Syria, Palestine, Lebanon, Egypt, Turkey) were occupied by the Roman Empire. 3) There was no tribal religions in the Middle East in 4th or 5th century as they were either under the Roman or Persian or Armenian Empire, none of them were tribal.
