Globalization, Farmers Rights & SEZ
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: The dispute of the farmers, against the oppressive governments in Singur, Nandigram, Orissa, Chhattisgarh, and Andhra Pradesh in India, is not a war between industry and agriculture or between progress and conservatism but between basic human rights and a government determined to create a pure capitalistic heaven by taking over poor peoples only possession of a little land and a home without paying proper compensation. The dispute is not restricted to West Bengal. The introduction of Special Eco.....read more in: Globalization, Farmers Rights & SEZ

20 R.Sharma on Tuesday, May 06, 2008 :

I have just read in The Organiser: Farmers die in Andhra SEZs blamed Till yesterday they were owners of 16 to 17 acres of farm land. Now they have become labourers in their own land. SEZs have swallowed up their land. So far 25 farmers lost their lives. Those who tried to save their land were put behind the bars. Amongst them some were bedridden and died and those survived are leading miserable lives since they have become paupers and are working as labourers in the companies like pharmaceutical on their own land taken over for SEZs. Some of the tragic stories are:- Shri Bhodya a farmer lost five acres of land. Unable to bear the shock his wife died and then he committed suicide by consuming poison. Whereabouts of his children is not known. Similar situation for Shri Bhadra another farmer. Worried over the loss of land, one day he went out but did not return. Ultimately his dead body was found in a well. One farmer Shri Mangya committed suicide and his wife with four children went to her parents’ house. Having lost 10 acres of land Shri Dipla Naik and his three sons became labourers. Officials kept severe pressure on Shri Kotya Naik to accept compensation and threatened to take over his lands otherwise and thus he died. 25 die in one village. Farmers become workers in their own land. Cases booked against those opposing SEZs. Suicides by farmers due to insults. Effects of Jodcherla SEZs in Jadcherla in Mehboobnagar district of A.P. Recently farmers who lost their lands agitated and police arrested 36 of them. Unable to bear the insult some farmers died and some are still under shock. Shri Balu who owned 16 acres of land in Tanda lost it and died due to humiliation and starvation. Shri Valluri Balaiah of Polepalli village lost his land and cases were booked against him by Police and he died due to humiliation and harassment through court cases. Shri Pedda Pentaiah of Polepalli lost his wife when his four acres of land was taken over by two factories. He said that there was no land even for burying of dead bodies. Yesterday’s farmers are today’s labourers. Farmers of villages Polepalli and Gundlaganda Tanda two years back owning 5 to 25 acres of land today have become labourers on their own land. The farmers told their agony thus:- Earlier we used to plough the land and with four months of work we used to get food for one year but now in our own lands where companies have come up we are forced to do hard labour work in hot sun. In China SEZs are for export oriented industries. In India SEZs are tax free Real Estate Development by driving out poor farmers.
18 R.Sharma on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 :

In the Mille Gazettee, the organ of the Indian Muslims, I have seen a report about the evictions of poor Muslim farmers in a SEZ in Masharastra. However, all other newspapers are silent.
17 A.Moron on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 :

gujarat sez virodhi: Very good post, as we all, due to the biased reportings in the Indian media, got the idea that all is good in SEZ in Gujarat. There are lots of problem in the SEZs in Maharastra and Hariyana too but we do not see much in the Indian media.

More than a thousand people are participating in the dharna in their capacity as representatives of hundreds of struggles happening across the country in their respective areas. The Sangharsh struggle in Delhi is particularly in the context of the two recent bills presented to the parliament by the MoRD and passed on to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Rural Development – the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill and the Rehabilitation and Resettlement Bill 2007. People"s movements have been raising their opposition against these bills for the past several months as these bills are aimed at supporting the ongoing land grab by corporates and government, leading to much larger displacement all over the country. The movements rejected the two bills presented in the parliament in December 2007 and challenged their intent of justifying the ongoing inhuman displacement. The Land Acquisition Act, a colonial legacy, is being amended to include private & corporate interest into "public purpose"! The amendments continue to allow land acquisition without consent of Gram Sabhas and Ward Sabhas, and also includes an emergency clause that would allow property to be acquired within 48 hours! The People"s organizations demanded that the Land Acquisition Act be repealed. The Resettlement & Rehabilitation Bill 2007 is weak since it does not guarantee land for land nor does it guarantee an alternative livelihood. Though minimum displacement is a stated objective, it does not operationalize the same. A new Development Planning Act, following the mandates of Article 243 and the 73rd and 74th amendments to the Indian Constitution, should be enacted based on the policy drafted by the People"s movements and approved by the National Advisory Council in 2006. In the presence of the people gathered from around the country, the dharna was inaugurated at 12 noon by the leadership of the collective including Medha Patkar (National Alliance of People"s Movements), Ashok Choudhary (National Forum of Forest People and Forest Workers), Gautam Bandopadhyay (Nadi Ghatti Morcha), Arun Khote (National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights), Kamla Yadav (Narmada Bachao Andolan), Shaktiman Ghosh (National Hawker Federation), Lal Babu (Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao), Maj.Gen. 15 A.Moron on Monday, April 28, 2008 :

16000 farmers have committed suicides already due to the debt they cannot pay off. Indira Gandhi had nationalised banks to remove the money lenders from the rural economy, but Monmohan Singh reinvited them back to suck the blood from the farmers again.
14 S.Ghosh on Sunday, April 27, 2008 :

The main problem is just a little money. The npublic sector banks no longer give loans without security. So the farmers have to borrow from the money lenders and lose their land in no time.
13 R.Sharma on Thursday, April 24, 2008 :

Globalization has a serious cost. All Indian banks have lost huge money by buying mortgage-backed-securities from the American banks, who are also financing destruction of farmlands to create real estates or amusement parks in India.
12 A.Moron on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 :

Lots of SEZs are not industrial enterprises but real estate business. It is really stupid to destroy farm land to have real estate. Where the food will come from in future???
11 R.Sharma on Monday, April 21, 2008 :

In Maharastra, Hariyana, Uttar Pradesh as well fetile lands are now being converted into SEZs. Soon there will be a food crisis in India like we had in 1965-67. SEZs should go to the land not suitable for agriculture; there are lots of such land in India.
10 A.Moron on Sunday, April 20, 2008 :

Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, western West Bengal, also have land which are of very poor quality. These areas are suitable for industrial development as these are close to the mining resources as well. Problem comes in when people like Tata wanted to destroy most fertile land. Indian business community does not think in terms of the interest of the country; this is the characteristics of the private sector. The private sector only think about their profit. That is the reason private sector ultimately is harmful for the people. The private sector can get anything by bribing the politicians but they would do great harm for the country.
9 A.Moron on Sunday, April 20, 2008 :

Most parts of Gujarat are semi-arid lands, no good for agriculture. Thus, farmers would be glad to give up their land if they get assurance of a job. In West Bengal as well, Jindal steeel has got huge land-areas to develop a steeel project; farmers are more than happy to give up their land as that areas have poor quality land and all farmers will be employed in that company. Thus SEZs can be developed in areas where land is of poor quality and if the evicted farmers can get jobs in the SEZs. SEZs should not be allowed in fertile land. We already have a food crisis all over the world. Reductions of farming lands will increase the problem.
8 Truth Speaks on Sunday, April 20, 2008 :

Whereever there are SEZs, there are huge protests and ordinary people(especially the farmers) are very angry at the governments because the governments are grabbing their land at below market price and giving to big industrialists. Bengal,, Andhra Pradesh etc to name a few. But there is a big exception: Gujarat and other BJP ruled states like Madhya Pradesh. Because Modi and others are not allowing fertile lands for SEZs. And Gujarat still has many successfully implemented SEZs. Where there is a will, there is way. BJP Chief Ministers(especially with RSS background) are showing that will.
7 A.Moron on Friday, April 18, 2008 :

India needs a comprehensive public distribution system and abolition of forward trading in essential commodities, which supports speculators. However, Sharad Pawar is a friend of the speculators and importers. He has a strange argument On universalisation of the PDS, he said the universal public distribution system would not only require huge quantities of foodgrains but also result in price increases which would hurt below the poverty line families. This is a stupid argument. It is essential remove this ugly man from the Ministry.
6 A.Moron on Friday, April 18, 2008 :

Yes, we should better take up some of these Gandhian idea. What is the point of having 10 percent growth rate when people cannot eat well, live well or dress well.
5 R.Sharma on Friday, April 18, 2008 :

Cooperative farming was a Gandhian idea. It should have been promoted during the last 60 years. In that case we could not see so much poverty and destitutions when rich Indians are spending their fortunes for some worthless MBA. It was also Gandhian idea to be happy with what we can produce rather than to import everything to ruin our own industries and manufacturing.
4 S.Ghosh on Friday, April 18, 2008 :

More than half a million Bangladeshi troops have been ordered to eat potatoes in an attempt to ease the impact of surging rice and wheat prices. India should do that too for everyone. Potato costs only Rs 3 per KG , rice is already Rs.25 per KG. If people can change their food habits they will have less problem.
3 S.Ghosh on Thursday, April 17, 2008 :

In India there are rising prices of food. In West Bengal because of success in production potato farmers are committing suicides as the market price of potato collapsed below the cost of production. If a governmenmt does not care about the farmers it can happen.
2 R.Sharma on Thursday, April 17, 2008 :

Compensations should take into account of the loss of houses, loss of profession and the loss of the land ( along with its appreciations). Industries should be located in imfertile lands, not not the most fertile irrigated land, because India is a food deficit country once again and almost half of the land in India are not really suitable for good agriculture, industries can go there.
1 A.Moron on Thursday, April 17, 2008 :

Gandhi has suggested cooperative self sufficient village community to have sustainable agriculture. Unless the government will take care of the people, which this government does not want at all, nothing will happen.
