Amartya Sen and Globalization
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: Amartya Sen’s observation on the recent land-grab movements in India to create Special Economic Zones should be analyzed in a proper light. Sen made the comment that for economic development industrialization must proceed irrespective of whether it may destroy fertile land because industrializations in the developed countries previously have destroyed a lot of fertile lands and that was the price of progress. Sen has ignored a basic point. The dispute of the farmers against the oppressive governm.....read more in: Amartya Sen and Globalization

9 R. Sharma on Thursday, September 27, 2007 :

I guess Sanjit misunderstood the main points raised in the article, which is not against industrialization as such but against improper locations of industries and unfair compensations for the evicted people. Compensations should take into account of the loss of houses, loss of profession and the loss of the land ( along with its appreciations). Industries should be located in imfertile lands, not not the most fertile irrigated land, because India is a food deficit country once again and almost half of the land in India are not really suitable for good agriculture, industries can go there.
8 Sanjit on Monday, September 03, 2007 :

Your arguments against Amartya Sen is all fine but do YOU have a plan for India to move forward ? I dont think so - atleast that is not apparent in your article. You say Amartya Sen ignores the basic principle that the poor are not compensated. While this maybe partially true, you have ignored the fact that industrialization spawns a better economy and what goes around comes around. The "industrialists" and their men will get richer but in the long run they will have to spend all that cash and the poor supply goods to them, thereby earning money and improving their lot. I remember some idiotic politicians claiming that the IT industry and globalization helps no one but a few. They dont realize that when people make money they also spend most of it - hence poor people can become suppliers, get money tend their kids to school and the next generation will rise to the top. Your ideas of stagnating things is what put the brakes on India during the first 50 years after independence. If you are a politician you may get more votes for your article but India will stand still or slip backwards. I think the days are numbered for people of your generation - its time for the new generation to bring in fresh ideas and take India forward.
7 S.Ghosh on Thursday, August 16, 2007 :

If A.Sen will support the oppressed people of India, as Rabindranath Tagore did, he will be popular. Otherwise people will not like him.
6 V.Mironi on Thursday, August 16, 2007 :

After 60 years of independent we still follow the British. When can we be independent?
5 R.Sharma on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 :

Yes, his analysis regarding Bengal famine shows that Amartya Sen has lost his common sense. However, that is true about every other noted Indian economists: Bhagwati, Srinivasan, Man Mohan Singh, etc etc; they are all pro-Western and against interests of the common people of india. It seems to me unless you are a Pro-Western you have no chance to be a prominent person in the western world.
4 g kapuria on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 :

R. Sharma.. Amartya Sen is no Nelson Mandela. He has not sacrificed anything in life. Amartya Sen was, and still remains a western stooge.
3 A.Moron on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 :

India is now only for the rich. Poor people will be sterilized and die without treatment, in floods and in future without drinking water as well, as water supply is getting privatized.
2 V.Mironi on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 :

Where the evicted people would go is the main issue. we cannot destroy farm lands without destroying human lives.
1 R. Sharma on Wednesday, August 15, 2007 :

Amartya Sen is very strange. He got the Nobel Prize already, now at least he can talk like an Indian rather than trying to please his western masters.
