An estimated up to 400 million very poor (Rs. less than40 per day income) may benefit with Rs. 50,000 crore or $10 billion, which works out to $2.5 per person. IMO, it is a small price to pay to inhibit malnourishment of children of very poor.

Following summary is provided by Mr. Ram Krishnan; please contact me if you need to read full article.

On water, energy and education and RTI;

In our projects in India, we have developed a simple to remember acronym called WEALTH and it is not what you think it is.

W.E.A.L.T.H = Water, Education/Energy, Agriculture, Livelihood, low cost and rural friendly Technology and Health.

Water and Energy are the building blocks. In most cases, we need to start with W and E. And if jump ahead in the wrong sequence, we will not succeed.

And if some of the lower variables are taken care of, sure, we can go to the higher building blocks.

I am attaching one graphic page on Water related items, (contact me as links can not be posted on this website). It was born out of my last 8 years of work in India. My recent friends in Mexico, Haiti and Nigeria have found it quite applicable in their places also (to some degree).

On the poverty reduction front, another major weapon is "Education"

Think of two women.

First, a poor woman in a village, attends usually up to elementary school, has no livelihood to make a living, works for their farmer parents as a field worker when she is 8+, her parents get her married off by age 12 or so. She then gets 2 or more babies before she is twenty. She herself will die early.

The second woman is lucky to get her education till the 11th or 12th standard (age 18). She pursues some livelihood, gets married by 20 or 22, and in tern has fewer and staggered number of babies.

The poverty cycle using the first woman as an example, repeats itself every 12 years or so.

The educated woman"s cycle repeats itself every 18 or 20 years.

If according to the World Bank, we have around 2 billion people in the world, out of a total of around 6.2 billion, living under $ 2.5 per day per person; the 2 billion segment grows faster than the educated segment. By the way, the $ 2/day figure was recently increased to $ 2.5 per day, because the $ is losing its value.

A simple investment - an ordinary bicycle can make the difference (up to some extent) in the above matter.

How could a simple bicycle make a difference?

NOTE: link available from me if interested.

In our project site, shown by the concentric circles in the graphic available from me, a real map, we count around 51 villages in a radius of 4 to 5 kilometers (approx 3 miles).

Each village has an elementary school. The villages come in 3 sizes; Small (100 families), Medium (250 families) and large (400 families). In our 51 village cluster, we have approximately 1 large town with 10,000 people and a Higher Secondary School. The 51 villages are approximately broken into 35 small villages, 10 medium villages and 6 large villages.

If roads and some form of mobility is not there, the children from the 35 small villages and 10 medium villages will most likely stop their education with 5th grade. Once you provide them (on a loan) a simple bicycle, the same children can have the opportunity to complete their education by riding to the large town with 10,000 people (Vilathikulam, TN where I work).

A simple bicycle can make the difference between the 2 types of woman in my earlier discussion on poverty cycle.

On RTI - Right to information act

The power of RTI in releasing funds to the villagers

Did you know that a small village in Tamil Nadu with 100 families can receive about Rs 10.5 lakhs every year?

Yes, every year. But villagers need to KNOW that such funding is available for them.

The total available for this region with 50 villages

We split 50 villages into 6 large villages with 400 families, 14 Medium size villages and 30 small size villages with 100 families. We simply ratioed the Rs 10.5 lakh estimate for a small village.

The total for these 50 villages = Rs 934.5 lakhs or Rs 9.3 Crores per year (and every year)

Truth Speaks on Jun-02 : US, Israel fanning Indo-Pak tensions, says Qadhafi [1 comments]

Qadhafi"s argument seems logical. US and Israel are trying their best to divert "Islamic Bomb" on to India. At the same time, China is supporting Pakistan at its best to hurt India more, because China treats India as enemy and competition in the region.

Compare this against Modi"s reception in quake affected Gujarat. He is treated like "god" by the victims for the help they received from Modi"s government. That"s the difference between Modi and all other "SECULAR" CMs.

I wonder why Amnesty or HRW never demanded mass murder and ethnic cleansing of Hindus and Kashmiri Pandits in Kashmir. Guess they don"t care about Hindus" human rights, especially when Islamic Terrorists, Pakistani and Muslims are culprits.
