g kapuria at 16:18 Today: In your post you mentioned, "the NGOs are yet to make large-scale difference".

A speculation was that the BJP lost to Congress five years ago as NGOs operators guided the voters in rural communities they serve to vote for politicians who most likely would look after their interests.

This is one example of a significant impact made by NGOs.

BJPwalas still haven"t understood that if they want to regain power, they have to court voters among 800 million rural communities who make less than $2/day. Just think how Mayawati, Mulylam Singh Yadav, Lalu Prasad, Mamata Benarjee, and CPI leftist garner their votes from poor of their strong holds.

Indian rural voters may be illiterate but they vote from their pockets each time. When they find their pockets empty at the family feeding time they know they have to find a politician who may, just may change their fortunes.

If you doubt my observations just make time to visit India"s rural communities I have visited to get it straight from the rural voters.

KKB.. point noted.

g kapuria at 16:18 Today: You are right about most NGOs.

There are more than one million NGOs in India. They are not monitored and rated. Many are run for private use for personal enrichment.

Recently (March 13, 2009) I attended a presentation at India House of Houston by a bureaucrat of MOIA Mr. Mohandas and its new operations in collaboration with TCS designed Global Link.com

They talk good - most Indian desk jockeys and bureaucrats do - and now MOIA has established India Development Foundation.org to pitch to NRIs to channel their donations through it. It was presented as a service to NRIs.

I asked Mr. Mohandas if they plan to rate the million or more NGOs to help NRIs with a decision, who to channel the donations to. Nope was the response.

Not only many NGOs but even MOIA is now in the running for NRI donations.

Many gullible NRIs may fall for it. That"s is the sad part.

KKB..Calm down please, no one is after you personally. It is all a bit of friendly jive. But I would say that you are wrong about one thing. You have too much hope and expectation from NGOs. No one denies that they do their bit. Even with your excellent mentoring, the NGOs are yet to make large-scale difference. If a grassroot movement wants to make a large difference, it must bring innovations whose scope will be like that of Microsoft. I do not see that in the horizon. Do you? Instead, I see the Indian problem to be so vast that we must have GREAT and unfaltering governance to overcome poverty. We simply do not have any other option at this moment.
10 030201kishankb on Apr-01 :

Here is a demographics statistic that some of you may not know. Nearly 50% of India"s population is under age and may not be eligible to vote in elections. This information is in the just released book, Imagining India by Nandan Nilkhani (2009).

I read in the Hindu that BJP is planning to reach 100 million (10 cror) voters through SMS.

Do any of you know what is the age of population of Indians who use SMS to communicate? My guess is most of them are ineligible to vote youth.

As with literacy most adults are SMS illiterate; but I have been wrong before.

Truth Speaks at 15:36 Today: Almost all politicians of India and for that matter America are communal, no doubts, ifs and buts about it. MMS is no exception. I have lived in America for nearly 50 years.

The issue is how to be effective in cultivating policies of Indian governments, both central and state for the benefit of all - rich, middle-class and poor; especially poor as far as I am concerned.

I don"t need to tell anyone that India has 250 million poor who earn less than $1 a day and 800 million who earn $2/day or less.

IMHO, BJP was voted out of power last time as they focused and counted only on the 300 million Indians who earn more than $2/day. They focused on internet technology to reach voters forgetting that at the time less than 5 million internet connected computers existed all across India and most importantly, those who are well to do and can afford the cost for a PC with internet access in India don"t even bother to vote.

What is unique about Indian politicians is that for some reasons I have not yet understood they feel that they need vote-banks of communal forces to get elected. IMHO, elections in India are won by politicians who motivate and galvanize support of all those who earn less than $2/day.

I have a feeling that all of you who interact with me are keen observers of current affairs in South Asia. May be you all know what I am talking about. If not then I have spelled it out for you.

8 Truth Speaks on Apr-01 :

kkb, you are really getting old. Manmohan Singh famously said "Minorities (read Muslims and Christians)have the first right on India"s resources". He is not communal to you?
7 030201kishankb on Apr-01 :

g kapuria at 00:58 Today: Yep, I know what mentoring is all about.

I also know why and what it means to deliver results, slave or not.

Vasant at 10:38 Today: Hogwash? there are better young BJPwalas who some day can make a difference. I doubt it if the geriatric generation can be relied on achieve what we all want for India.

Thruth Speaks at 11:41 Today: If I remember correctly Mohammad Gaznavi was a slave Turkic commanders from Central and North Eurasia. He delivered not only Afghanistan and North India to then Muslim Empire but also showed to Muslim warlords how to followed in his footsteps to repeatedly deliver conquests of India including one by Baber.

I wish Hindu warlords had cultivated slaves like those Muslims.

I admire the slavedog who can quietly deliver results to command respect of global leaders at the G-20 meeting.

MMS also neutralized his opponents be it Mr. Musharraf or Mr. Zardari without being bellicose.

Opposing him is a politician who employs communal divisive forces for vote-banks.

We NRIs have no vote and we can hardly influence elections in India. So all my comments are in fun and no disrespect is intended for any one participating in this dialogue.
6 g kapuria on Apr-01 :

TS..Hey.. that is an excellent way to describe Congress leaders. Slavedogs :-)
5 Thruth Speaks on Apr-01 :

Why PM Manmohan Singh is opposed to extracting from illegal Indians accounts in Swiss banks is he knows the first big account is Sonia Gandhi"s. How can he act against his madame, after all she is feeding him with d()g biscuits every day. MMS is an obedient and faithful slave d()g.
4 Vasant on Apr-01 :

Swiss changed their law after German GOVpressurized them to do so. Even US ask USB bank to disclose US citizen account and if I am correct they even fine the USB bank for asking US citizen to put their in banks to save taxes.

So, Advaniji and other all knew about money but could not act due to Swiss law. After chane of law this matter came up for discussion but GOI failed to act. Reason are well known.

In that respect, BJP is not in power and Advanji is not HM, So he can not act.

3 g kapuria on Apr-01 :

KKB.. You certainly are getting old :-)
2 030201kishankb on Mar-31 :

There undoubtedly is money in Swiss and other such banks that protect identity of the account holder. However, what is presented in this article is speculative, without any proof.

It"s a political mirage; nothing will come of it once the election are over and even if Advani along with the BJP majority comes to power.

Mr. Advani was a home minister for five years. He never mentioned or took action against any black money accounts.

Mr. Advani was responsible for negotiating release of IA plane and its passenger in exchange for releasing hardened terrorists. His record is poor on not negotiating or not yielding to terrorist demands; he gets a fail grade from me.

Mr. Advani, Miss Mayawati, several Congress politicians, Mr. M. Yadav, Mr. Lalu Prasad, Mr Karunanidhi, etc are experts in playing the communal card to get elected and hence not a very credible politicians.

Now in his 80s as a member of geriatric generation he should be working for and mentoring young politicians from background as an elder statesman. A lot can be done without getting a ministerial birth. India has many illustrious social activists who are doing just that.

Too bad Advani is not one of them.
1 common sense on Mar-31 :

Advani should have formed the task force a few years ago and made the recommendation known. Better yet, he should have implemented the recommendation when he was the HM.

Another sign of his shooting in the dark!
