Slumdog Millionaire: Racial prejudice cont..
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: This ostentatious display of anti Hindu sentiment is of course lost on the jingoists or those ABCDs who go gaga over such pernicious cinema. Sincere critics questioning the dumb plot where a slum boy grows up into a sophisticated leftist JNU product with a flawless English accent are censured by appealing to the authority of the Golden globe awards. They keenly forget the film was precisely designed for that, appeal to the racial sensitivities of those who really matter! Therefore, even the libe.....read more in: Slumdog Millionaire: Racial prejudice cont..

It remains to be established whether the author of Slumdog is a Hindu or a Secularist. We know very little about the whole thing.

Thank you very much for expressing my sentiments exactly. Just wondering, does the original book that this film is based on, write this incident as they pictured it? The author is a Hindu, I think, how could he write such stuff? Besides the idea that a muslim could only remember the Hindu God because of what happened, is to me, can make sense only to a foreigner. I don"t know who this blue God is, so it must be that the hero does not know either.

I am a follower of Gandhi, I deplore the use of violence to make our point but one should not lie down and take it either. We should peacefully protest such depictions. One question I always ask: What if the situation was reversed? How about the killings in Rwanda led by christian priests? How about the pedophile priests? If a movie was made about these events, any chance christ would make a similar apperance?

Lastly, I am sure Danny Boyle came in contact with a lot of Hindus while filming this movie. How come no one spoke up? Not even Anil Kapoor?
29 g kapuria on Feb-26 :

Arjun... nobody here is supporting the crazies who went and beat up the girls in the Mangalore pub. We all condemn those people, and we do not do that as lip service. They are not a nationwide problem, so cool your steam, ok? Let me ask you, do you have the courage to condemn Islamic and Christian terrorism? Have you ever done that? Do you even disapprove of them? Until you do, you will have no standing to come here and lecture us about supposed morality.
28 g kapuria on Feb-26 :

I have no desire of watching this movie. But those who have, should compare the movie with the original book. If it turns out that the movie has gone beyond the book and made it a goal to highlight communal tensions and poverty, I would be more comfortable in denouncing the intent of Danny Boyle. I am quite aware that westerners consider our type of communal problems primitive and tribal (their type of communalism is supposedly more sophisticated) and our poverty something to remind themselves of their exalted status in life. If so, I request all of you who are reading this page to request our filmmakers to make a movie showing how the British destroyed our textile industry by disfiguring the weavers and closed down Ayurvedic schools to destroy our medicine.

Thank God for some sanity in this whole farce. Thanks Saurav for a very critical analysis of this film. I have been hitting it out in other blogs reg this film and how they have thrashed our Hindu religion. We hindus are the mugs, we celebrate, more than the Muslims, the success of this film and the Oscars showered on it by the obliging West.( by the way, why do Indians crave for whitefellas recognition?)
The question is, WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
26 Mohan on Feb-14 :

Excellent article by Saurav; calls spade a spade and
shows the movie in its p-sec elements. Anyone who has seen the
first half of the movie would agree with the p-sec excess.
25 Mohan on Feb-14 :

Good posts from Mayank, Sabrina and Kapuria, A. M0ron.

I"d like to know how you guys would compare Slumdog Millionaire
with Salaam Bombay. Is the latter marginally better ( without crap like "beat them, they are muslims" uttered out of context ).

Second half of Slumdog Millionaire was good. Salaam Bombay appeared good
throughout. Having seen it long time back, I"d like to know what others think.

I"m going to have to disagree with you. If anything I think this movie had a lot of negative views against Muslims. First of all, 80.5% of the Indians are Hindus, with only 13.4% of the population Muslim. Why would it be that the main character is Muslim when there are technically a lot fewer of them? Shouldn"t the poor kid living in the slums be a Hindu? Jamal the Muslim is portrayed as an uneducated chai-wala, along with his brother who is a notorious gangster. Not only that, why is the lead gangster, Javed, muslim as well? This makes it seem like most of the crime caused in India is by Muslims. Why is the poor Latika (a Hindu) being exploited by the Muslim gangsters? It appaled me as well when Salim was about to go kill someone, he goes to pray Namaaz and ask for forgiveness ("God, I have sinned"). This makes it look like killing is something habitual for Muslims and they can just pray and ask for forgiveness. At the end of the movie, the "evil" Salim recites before he dies "God is Great", an Islamic pratice. It makes it seem like all practicing Muslims kill people, then hope to go to heaven.
I really don"t see how this movie could be anti Hindu, just because of one scene. That scene showed the true hatred Hindus had for Muslims; but it paled in comparison to the overall negative views towards Islam.
23 Srini on Feb-03 :

Arjun,

While it is unfortunate that some women in the Pub were thrashed, Iam not upset either. I have seen men and women of this category in call centres around India. Not too long ago, when I worked at ITPL, Bangalore and made use of ITPL transport, these elitists and pub-ists constantly disturbed other ITPL employees. Things came to such a standstill that the bus driver was not able to concentrate by the excessive noise inside the bus.

Extreme pub culture is dangerous as it leaves its long term fingerprints on society. It is like cancer and can impact even the most rational human beings. While excessive cultural policing is dangerous(such as a strict dress code for women, long beard for men etc), extreme freedom is dangerous too. Everything is fine in moderation.

By the way, Iam just wondering if you ever said anything when Tasleema Nasreen, a women from Bangladesh who likes to question Islam, was hounded by three Muslim MLAs in Andra Pradesh not too long ago
22 Srini on Feb-03 :

It is not uncommon for the western media to show India in very poor light. I havent seen SlumDog, dont intend to see it either, but I have got an idea. In Australia, for instance, india bashing is often seen in the media, especially TV. Fortunately, australians of indian origin either do not react and are too busy with their own lives to be bothered.

It was reported in a well known news paper that mostly, Bramhins are selected in the Indian cricket team. There was another program, where old Indian widows were showed in very bad light and expolited by Temples. There was another program on ABC TV about 1 year back, where the commentator made it very clear that Temples are a place commonly used to have sex with the priests. It was also said that Hindu temples are a display of wealth and grandeour whereas Mosques were shown to be pious places with extreme simplicity.

My friend,

You speak of receiving hate when you yourself disperse it through it through your foul articles. Dont spread disharmony amongst Indians.

Your use of language is good and powerful. Why use it against a work of fiction - a movie? Why not use it to write against the Hindu hardliners who wreak havoc thorugh out the nation?

Do you have the courage to write against the hardliners who trashed our own indian womenfolk at a pub in mangalore? Do you know how disgusting they looked on TV? They said the women were of low morales. And what about these hardliners then? molesting, trashing, pushing. Is this the Hindu way of life?

Or the police officers who trashed a little girl in UP? yes she stole money - but that does not justify the action of the police.

Why dont you write against the Sena who spread discord and disunity and communal problems in the cities, affects work and cause crores of rupees in loss.

Is this the kind of behaviour you want to defend and promote? Why not take up arms against such people? Why dont you write against them? Simple - because you"re scared of doing so.
Its easy for you to target peaceful communities and outsiders - even if it sometimes speak the truth. I have seen several people whose total mindsets have changed positively towards poor people and slum dwellers after watching this movie. This is effectiveness and the success of the movie. When it comes to simple social causes, you cant write.

All the best my friend. Request to utilize your valuable column space for something more realistic above rather than a work of fiction. Hope things in this country take a turn for the better.

Best regards

Common sense.. is Hindus beating up Muslims the reality? What are you talking about?
19 A.Moron on Jan-29 :

There is no shortages of films in India showing the reality. The films by Satyajit Roy, Benegal, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Guru Dutt, Mrinal Sen, Bomal Roy, Ritikh Ghatak, are some of the best examples of humanistic films on the reality of India.

However, films prodiced by the British ( Heat and Dust, Guru, Phantom India, City of Joy, and now Slumdog) are nothing but anti-Indian propaganda.
It is the British who kept us poor and underdeveloped. Since 1947 what good they have done. They have partitioned India, helped Pakistan on every international matter, even on this Mumbai mass-murder.

In the BBC and in every newspapers in Britain the picture they show about India and particularly Hinduism is just horrific. This is the reason this film got so many prizes from their cousin Americans.

It is essential to ban all Anglo-American films in India. They are our enemies because they are friends of our worse enemies, China and Pakistan.

18 common sense on Jan-29 :

Nothing shameful in seeing reality; shameful is doing nothing in alleviating the suffering of the poor.

What percent of the community is involved in the effort?
17 A.Moron on Jan-28 :

Censor Board in India is full of film stars and jouirnalists with vested interests in promoting Western films and Bollywood films, although these are against India.
16 S.Ghosh on Jan-28 :

The shameful fact is that Indians are seeing that film in India, as if there is no censor board in India.
15 g kapuria on Jan-27 :

Jai.. we are not responsible for the degradation of the western society. It makes no sense for you to give us lessons about that. The primary objection against Slumdog is not poverty, it is how they selectively portray Hindus are the offenders and Muslims are the benign folk of India. Now, ask yourself, is that the truth? And if it is not, is the director justified in blaming Hindus?
14 Mayank Patel on Jan-27 :

Jai --- Do you see anything wrong in a "Wild Wild West" movie where native-americans are always depicted as "Savage" and white-americans as innocent frontier family ?. The exact same scenerio is being repeated not only in "Wild Wild East India" movie but also in "Wild Wild East India" media-report depicting hindus as "savage" and muslims/christians as "innocent and secular".

History proves beyond reasonable doubt that this "savage" vs "innocent" depiction is a lie.
13 S.Ghosh on Jan-27 :

Anglo-Americans never helped India during the last 60 years. Is there any industry in India which was developed with the help od USA? British companies did some work on a contract basis( like for example Durgapur steel plant) but have never transferred any technology. Anglo-American contributions on India"s space-atomic Energy-science-Technology are almost ZERO. What they have done to reduce our poverty except for sending ENRON to cheat us?
Now they are trying to discredit us by saying Hindus are torturing the Muslims and that is the reason poor Muslims take reacted by killing 300 people in Bombay. That is what the British foreign secretary Miliband, a close friend of the Price of India and soon to be the Badshah of India, said clearly. All most all of these films on India produced by the British show only the Muslims ( The Guru, Heat and Dust, A Passage to India, Far Pavillion, and now Slum Dog) as if Hindus are nothing but shadows in India and the real Indians are all Muslims. This is the British view of India.
Yes, we are poor, but that is the excuse for the Anglo-americans to insult us, when millions of their own people are and were very poor as well. The grand mother of the current Prime Minister of Australia used to beg and steal ( and of course use her body to earn her bread and butter) in the streets of London before she was deported to Australia. This is the origin of the Anglo-Americans. Do they show these in any Hollywood films?????

12 A.Moron on Jan-27 :

Jai: I have seen a lot of Hollywood/British movies. Yes, they have sex and violence, but they do not describe the horrible poverty they have. India"s problem is our problem. Anglo-Americans should try to talk about their own poverty and now total bankruptcy, unemployment, destruction of family values where almost half of the children born are all bastards.

11 Jai on Jan-26 :

Mr Moron,
It looks like you dont watch a lot of Hollywood movies...Do you seriously think that there are no movies made in the US which doesn"t depict the existing Gun-Culture, Drugs, Racism etc etc.. .Have you even heard of movies like Mississippi Burning, Crash, A Time to Kill, American History X etc etc....
People like you want to see and show that the glass is half full....There is nothing wrong in it...But we have to realise that the glass is half empty, and it aint gonna fill-up on its own...we will have to do that ourselves....

Jai:
What really exist in USa and UK: Millions of homeless sleeping in cardboard boxes on the streets; half of the children born are bastards; 20 percent of the families are starving everyday; 26 percent of the population are practically uneducated; one cannot walk on the streets in evening safely; there is no security of either life or jobs.
Do you see these in Hollywood films?
India is poor but there are culture and humanity, which the West ( USA-UK) does not want show about India. For them India is just filth and dirt and "bloody violent Hindus" and "pious Muslims". Those Indians who have participated in the Slumdog should be stripped of their passports. They are not Indian, but slaves of the British( the director is British; it is another British operation against India).

8 Jai on Jan-26 :

Not sure why some of you are crying regarding the movie....
I havent seen it myself, but if its a movie that show the slums and how poor the people are in India ....How people are suffering etc etc.....But then doesnt all this exist in India...Is it something the movie has created or imagined....It is not something about showing India in a poor light ...It is about showing something that really exist in India....
7 Mayank Patel on Jan-26 :

Saurav did a fine job highlighting the prejudice and bias in a typical "Wild Wild East India" movie and media reports which are portraying and popularising "Hindu Savage" myth. This delibrate distortion must be countered before it is too late.

Daily pioneer columnist Kanchan Gupta has written an article "Slumdog is about defaming Hindus".

6 g kapuria on Jan-26 :

I totally agreed with your blog entry. I think you need to somehow spread this to a larger venue so more people can read it an see why the movie was so prejudiced.

4 S.Ghosh on Jan-26 :

Slum Dog is the just reward for India. British had killed millions during their 200 years rule. They have partitioned India. UK had supported Pakistan on every international matters. Yet India gave recently a contract of $6 Billion to supply some junk aircrafts. In return British are now supporting Pakistan.
3 A.Moron on Jan-26 :

There is nothing much to be worried about, because no body I mean foreigners will see this film, until it will be adopted by the BBC ( the India hater media channel of Britain). How many foreigners have ever heard of the film "City of Joy" or "Salam Bombay",..... a very few ( only those journalistic type who hate India by all means). Ordinary British have no time for these, they already know India means only Mother Teresa and her lapers. They have no interest whatsoever about India about which they know next to nothing and they are not at all interested to know. Americans do not watch this kind of films; they do not have any particular hate for India either. Europeans do not care about English language films at all. Thus, you are only talking about the British journalists, a very few people. They can go on giving awards to all kinds of India-haters, but at the end of the day these people are dommed to fail to create any impressions.

It is heartening to note that you share the same concerns as I do and have the wherewithall to put them across. I am sharing with you a few emails that I wrote to a friend of mine on Q & A and Slumdog Millionaire.

Monday, 19 January, 2009 8:44 AM
Dear Karin,
A yahoo report on the film "SlumDog Millionaire", it seems I am not alone in feeling that the hype about the film is related to its representation of India as a home to wretchedness, squalor, hopelessness and despair; with fantasy as the only escape. (It is true; no doubt about it though, as an example India"s GPD is ~ USD 500, Luxembourg"s is ~ USD 30000)

Yogesh

2009/1/13
Dear Karin,
The book you had wrote to me about, Vikas Swarup"s Q & A, has grown up and has been made into a movie, Slum Dog Millionaire, directed by British director Danny Boyle. The Global Globe award for the film is just a signal to India from the developed world that despite all pretence and satellites to the moon, India for them is where people live the lives of slum dogs, (the truth is a majority does).

Bitter but true, wonder whether you will be watching the film.

Yogesh Khandke

On 01/09/2008
Dear Karin,

Thank you very much for the forward. Do you wish I work on the text?

Regarding Vikas Swarup I know now know that he is a diplomat and a writer. And that one book he wrote is Q and A, if you like my comment on it is from what ever angle you look at Dharavi, it is filthy and wretched, but writers have a knack of making even the most degenerated things glamourous. Another is that the hero always has to have a wierd name like Mohammad Ram Thomas, you cannot sell books with heros named Hari Narayan Apte (It will be diffficult for you to understand the last line, it is too context specific, if you have an Indian friend and the time take his help with it)

Regards,

Yogesh
