Response II - Karan Thapar-Whos Hindu?
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: There are people who think they are literates of highest order, when actually, they do not understand even the A B C D of life. From this article Mr. Karan Thapar proved that he is also one among them. Dr. Arindam Bandyopadhyay already gave a good reply to him. Yet I am sure, Mr. Thapar is not that matured enough to understand Dr. Arindams reply. So, I am trying to put things in a manner which a child can understand.Which is good - a united family or a divided family? I would not be surprised if.....read more in: Response II - Karan Thapar-Whos Hindu?

Dear Chanchal

This is not really a response to your comments / Dr. Arindam"s response to Karan Thapar. I went through Mr. Thapar"s deliberations, Dr. Arindam"s response and your thoughts on his response.

At the outset, I would like to unequivocally state that all the violence that we have witnessed since December last, no matter who did it to whom needs to be condemned and deplored without any reservation whatsoever. I do not believe that violence needs to be responded with violence - An eye for an eye will make the world blind and that will not achieve or accomplish anything worthwhile.

Viktor Frankl, who was a long time prisoner of the Nazi concentration camp during the II World War lost all that he had, his father, mother, brother and his wife to the gas ovens. He however endured and survived the violence of the Nazi death camps. In his book "Man"s search for meaning" while describing the inhuman and unimaginable conditions of the concentration camps, he makes a very powerful statement. He says that the last of the human freedoms is the ability to choose one"s attitude in any given circumstance. It essentially means that I cannot choose how you treat me, but how I respond to that treatment is entirely within my control and is a choice that I exercise. It is not that Laxmanand Saraswati is any less important than Graham Staines or vice versa. I do not have the right to violate a life that is God"s creation. The significant difference that I see is in the response to the stimulus. People went on rampage and sought the extermination of innocents in retaliation when Laxmanand was killed by the Maoist rebels. Thousands were made homeless, scores killed, homes looted, women folk raped and violated,..In contrast, when Graham and his two children were mercilessly burnt alive by a blood thirsty bunch of fanatics in their vehicle, aas a reward for 34 years of serving the leprosy affected people of Mayubhanj and Baripada, the first statement that his wife Galdys gave was that she forgave the perpetrators of the crime, and continued her work amongst the outcaste and most unwanted people of the society. It takes a whole lot to be able to do that, especially when you have just lost your very own dear husband and two children. Nobody went around torching homes, murdering hapless villagers, razing down temples or mosques. As CS Lewis puts it "To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you." The very core and essence of a Christian life is love and forgiveness, because that was what Christ demonstrated on the cross for all of us.

You have quoted Luke 12; 51-53, where Jesus says that He has come not to bring peace, but division, and that fathers will be against sons and mothers against daughters .but you seem to have missed the context of this. When we quote a text out of context, it only becomes a pretext for misinterpretation. If I look around today, I see what was told by Jesus coming to fulfillment. If you go back to the first book in the New Testament, Mathew 10:34 says the same thing "Do you think I came to bring peace on earth; I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I came to set a man against his father.". But if you backtrack to the beginning of the chapter, you can see Jesus preparing his disciples for persecution, where He says that 22 "You will be hated because of my name." 27 "What I tell you in the darkness, speak in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim upon the housetops" 28 "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both body and soul in hell". Jesus did not come to bring the kind of peace that glosses over deep differences just for the sake of superficial harmony. Christian commitment may separate friends and loved ones. In saying this, Jesus was not encouraging disobedience to parents or conflict at home. Rather, he was showing that his presence demands a decision. Because some will follow Christ and some won"t, conflict will inevitably arise. To take our cross and follow Jesus means to be willing to publicly identify with him, to experience almost certain opposition and to be committed to face even suffering and death for his sake. I suppose that"s what a follower of Christ does. He does not retaliate, but forgives, and endures humiliation, suffering and persecution for His sake - because Christ endured for our sake, much more than any of us will ever endure.

I respect your beliefs and I have no business to belittle what you hold as precious in your heart. I strongly believe that when you throw mud at others, not only do you dirty your hands, you also lose a lot of ground. While I respect your belief, it does not mean that I agree with what you believe - and this applies vive-versa, in that I do not expect you to agre....

Truth Speaks on Oct-19 : North Indians attacked in Mumbai [1 comments]

I think it is time for RSS and Shiv Sena to go protect non-Maharashtrian Indians from the Chauvinism of MNS and its crook Raj Thackeray. And also call Congress bluff. I still remember stories of RSS protecting Sikhs" from Congress goons in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi Assassination in 1984.
