News Summary: Amidst the disastrous terrorist attack that took Mumbai, the commercial hub of India hostage to fear and uncertainty in one of its worst encounters ever, one big question that looms large is have we learnt our lessons yet? After so many past incidents, so many RED Alerts, be it the media, the government, the law and order or the security system, a question we need to ask is, Do we consider ourselves professionally mature and competent to handle such crisis situations?.....read more in: Indias Bungled Crisis Mgmt in Mumbai

21 common sense on Dec-15 :

The media has come under much criticism on its coverage of the terrorists" attack in Mumbai. The media, though, did its job, which is to inform the public on the happenings on the terror site. It did the job splendidly well for which it deserves commendations, and not criticism that it is being subjected.

The media"s reporting of the happenings helped quell rumors with strong communal overtones that could have set a wave of communal riots throughout the nation.

The ATS should be trained to function notwithstanding media reporting. There had been viewpoints by the retired military staff and the Monday morning coaches as to how the reporting helped the terrorists, but so far none of those involved in fighting the terrorists have said they would have been more efficient had there been no media reporting.

The ATS, also, have come under criticism for not been on the scene within minutes of start of the attack. Has anyone considered the time it takes to navigate through the crowded streets of Mumbai? Sure, the commando units were not stationed at the places of incidents.

Another charge against the ATS is that they operated with no single person in command. No surprise here either! Because of severity of attacks, units belonging to various disciplines were requisitioned to fight the enemy and the units operated blindfolded. Only concrete and definite information they had to go was the property address and very little else. Doubt, if they had maps of the interior of the properties under attack to pinpoint the areas to operate. Need of the hour was for them to react immediately. Under the circumstances, if the units functioned looking like operating without one person in charge, it is understandable.

20 Logic only on Dec-14 :

Unfortunately, God of Islam and Christianity advocates hatred towards anyone who don"t believe in them.. Such powerless is their God that he cannot do anything himself but asks their followers to hate.Interesting! Hindu God(s) on the other hand are evaluating if their followers have suffered enough. When their disciples have suffered enough, they would come alive to help the helpless!
19 S.Ghosh on Dec-08 :

It is not up to the Hindus to convert by force the Muslims( which is both illegal and punishable by death according the religion of the Muslims). These are unrealistic solutions.
However, it is within the right of the Indian State to abolish voting rights of the Muslims and as them to leave, as India was partitioned because of them.
Gradual repatriations of the Muslims to Pakistan and Bangladesh is both feasible and desirable.

18 Chanchal on Dec-08 :

The other alternative is - tit for tat. If you want to live in India (particularly the Indians who got converted) must convert back to Hindu. The things that has taken place in all countries must take place in India too. Why not start bringing down the Mosques and Madarsas. Why not start imposing Jajiya on Muslims too. But the larger question is, who will do it. Who will even think of doing it. And the answer is None. The most accepted name Narendra Modi will also not do it. Even Supreme Court has suggested removal of around 27 verses from Quran - will Modi do it in his own state. None has the will or courage to take this task.
It is the people who have to do it. Common Hindus must rise to save themselves. They must declare that they are Hindus and not Seculars. You and me can talk however over here and at times even contradict to each other. Let us keep doing it.
17 A.Moron on Dec-07 :

There are a possible 130 Million Muslims in India. If India send back 10 million each year, in 13-15 ( taking into account the natural growth) years time the problem will be solved. India has taken about 3 million Tamils who went to sri Lanka about 150 years ago. India has takem about 1 million people from Burma. Indians were expelled from Kenya and Uganda in 1972. in future they will be expelled from South Africa as well.
Pakistan had sent 30 million people, mostly Hindus, to India in 1970.
It is possible to send away Muslims to Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The alternative will be gradually India will be Islamalised in 100 years time just like what has happened to Indonesia and Malaysia.
16 Chanchal on Dec-05 :

It is not possible and sensible to drive out 20 Crore population... Yes, another break up of India is possible where these 20 Crore can be shifted... On the contrary, drive of Hindus is taking place wherever Muslim population crosses 50%. Some examples are Kashmir, Assam, Tripura, Eastern borders of West Bengal, Malegaon, Achalpur, Dhule, Bhiwandi, Konkan Belt, etc... So, important thing is how we diffuse this policy of Muslims where they first unite as peaceful crowd and then attack as religious crowd... Rule should be made that if a Muslim buys a property, he cannot sell it to another Muslim.. There should be no Muslim personal law (Law should be equal to all)... There should be no minority pleasing concepts and all kinds of subsidies should be cancelled.. But who will do this.. It is wrongly highlighted that there is no Political Will to do these things.. In reality, all these things are happening because of Political Will only...
And attacking Pakistan and charging Pakistan is an easy tool in the hands of Congress for Terrorism, while the problem lies within.. You develop as many security means as you wish.. it hardly matters.. because those who attack are sure that they are going to be killed.. They do not attack for money... They are highly committed on what they believe... And their belief is the root cause of terrorism... Will the Government dare to ask Muslim population to remove those verses from Quran which is creating these terrorist and support for terrorism in the name of Kafir and hatred theory of Quran.. Government will not do this.. Because Government is directed to act against Hindus.. and Sonia leads this movement under Vatican... Another Christian Antony is there to defame and weaken Indian Defense... And who knows with Ambika Soni how many others have converted to Christian in Congress.. as they all worship Sonia and not Bharat Mata...
The world is facing problem in the name of God... Unfortunately, God of Islam and Christianity advocates hatred towards anyone who don"t believe in them.. Such powerless is their God that he cannot do anything himself but asks their followers to hate.. Unfortunate.. and People should decide who is a Satan.. GOD who asks to hate and attack other GODS.. or GOD who is ever peaceful and have no problems with whatever way others chose to worship him..
15 A.Moron on Dec-04 :

All these angers of the Hindus ( I am sure Muslims are glad that so many bloody Hindus got killed)are meaningless because India can do nothing against Pakistan, which is armed with nuclear weapons.
There is only one way out tried by the Yugoslav President Milosovich: (a) drive out all Muslims from India; (b) close all consulates and embassies in Muslim countries; (c) do not give any visas to the muslims of any country; (d) stop all contacts with the Muslim countries.

If the Muslims are in India, Muslim terrorism will end automatically.

14 R.Sharma on Nov-30 :

Indian media follows their Anglo-American counterparts, who are supporting pakistan for decades.
ISI was formed by the British in 1948. Muzahiddins was formed by Jimmy Carter in 1978 and further enhanced by Reagan. Taliban was formed by Clinton. Bush gave more than $10 Billion to Pakistan military and all surplus weapons from NATO.
Pakistan is the baby of the Anglo-Americans. When the Indian media collaborates with them, we should not trust Indian media either.
13 030201kishankb on Nov-30 :

Not only did India bungled crisis management, its press lost credibility by publishing unsubstantiated news stories to fuel rumor mongering. Why can"t Indian press and media men wait for the officially conformable information to inhibit losing credibility?

What good are police with guns at the VT railway station if they are not issued bullets and also not trained to take initiative when they witness terrorists firing indiscriminately?
12 g kapuria on Nov-29 :

I absolutely agree that Indian media are extremely immature. Why else they would give Padmashri awards to Hindu haters like Rajdeep Sardesai and Barkha Dutt?
11 Radhika on Nov-29 :

If you were watching INDIA TV on 26th night when the attack was being covered.. It was showing one policemen wearing bullet proof jacket.. But the language used was : "Arey yeh kaun hai".. "Kya yeh Atankwaadi hai"... Don"t you think it is required to legally check the work of media...
From past one and half month - there was only one buzz word - Hindu Terrorist, Hindu Bomb, Lt. Col Terrorist... Terrorist have no religion...
The massive blasts in Assam was of no importance... Even Mumbai case have not created Islamic terrorists..
Hindus shall die from the attack of terrorists and Hindus should be declared as Terrorists..
You think Terrorists are doing it for money like our politicians... Terrorists are far more faithful and directed towards their religion, unlike people like you who do not have any direction... Terrorists live in India and they have not come through the sea all of a sudden...
Read the news carefully... they were helped and some of them are a part of Indian population...
Have you all ever pondered - why Pakistan or Bangladesh is in war with India? Why not Bhutan, Sri Lanka or Myammar? And how are these two pure Muslim countries able to do these blasts? Can you do the same in Pakistan and Bangladesh? No, you will be killed the moment you enter their territory.. Two policemen were cut to pieces the moment they entered Bhiwandi... So, talk sense...
You kill 10 terrorists and catch another 10... Nothing will result.. there are another set ready to attack... People need to go to the root and understand how these highly motivated and selfless terrorists are created...
10 PKS Bedi on Nov-29 :

This article has covered the aspect of media and overall management briefly but very well. We desperately need a clear-cut policy in place ..... one that will be introduced through parliament and be obeyed in letter and spirit, if we want to be able to tackle any such crises in the future. As a nation we have faced several such threats in the past, but, sadly, once the incident is over, we forget the lessons we should have learnt .... and, as the saying goes, we condemn ourselves to repeat the mistakes history should have taught us.
9 Sanchita, Kolkata on Nov-29 :

It is a very good article and should be an eyeopener for the media. I completely agree that the Indian media is still very immature and more often than not is driven by emotin rather than reasoning and their reporting of crisis exposes secrets which makes the situation more complex. The result is that the nation is left more vulnerable. I think the media should have formal training in dealing with such situations . Also it is important to be aware of ethical issues and sentiments as we are a diverse multicultural nation. I have had the opportunity to see crisis reporting by the media elsewhere and though the general public have an idea about the progress of investigations, the intricate operational details are never divulged. I think this makes it a lot easier to pin down suspects. There should certainly be a system of accountability -that would change things a lot
8 SANJOY BANERJEE, Cha on Nov-29 :

In India or rather Indian sub continent, people work in isolation. Why blame the media ? As far as they are concerned, they are interested only in their promotions, increments and fame. Only strong laws can prevent them from entering such sensitive areas. They can be permitted to report after the operation is over and that too the information which can jeopardise any future operation should be censored.
7 Buttar, Ambala on Nov-29 :

Liked your concern. I think we still may not have learnt it yet. We need iron hand to deal with terrorism and our leaders must realise it is much above the politics.
6 Manoj Kumar Chanan, on Nov-29 :

I am in agreement with what has been stated in the article. The media and the population at large needs to be kept away from the area of operations. As has been stated in the news papers this morning max people were glued to the TV sets witnessing the drama as it was unfolding. The NSG had a task at hand concentration and focus is the key element where fleeting opportunities are to be exploited for neutralising the terrorist. Sad to read "the curry kind" from UK who blatantly stated that the NSG was not professional "stating that the focus should have been to get the tourists hostages out first and then the terrorists should have been neutrailised". Reflects only one thing that the 72 year old man has a brain of a chicken and can only think like one in the form of human. There has been no response by the media, the political "leadership???" . Bal and Raj Thackeray may have been hiding under the beds - so called tigers- albeit with soiled pants. The Dy CM of Maharastra could only think of raising another NSG force for the state, he did not deliberate that he needs to improve the state police force who thought they were in " Ab tak chappan scenario". People have to remember that you do not have to die for your country, in this case make the other b-----d has to die for his cause. This is the subtle difference between professionals and the novices who have been made to look like professionals by the media hype. A terrorist is a cold blooded animal and has to be hunted and neutralised with the same professionalism. It pains the heart that the political leadership was exploiting this to suit the election environment. But alas! this what we have as our political leadership???
5 Arup Sen, Hyderabad on Nov-28 :

Though not much conversant with intricacies of military operations of this nature, my common sence prompts me to agree that there should be seamless coordination between various forces. Infact such matters should be front ended by one agency, others need to provide support as desired & not required. Regarding media, lesser said the better on their effort to gain prominance by sensationalising. In one hindi movie I saw how media can make a terror attack a success. Doordarshan is trying to maintain some principle, but it may not have many takers. In my mind, the general degardation in value based education system is the root cause of people thriving & gaining a better part of pie by sensationalising grievious matter. Only comprehensive education can make more & more people refuse to accept such journalism. Today it is the other way round & that is why some contemporary print media do flourish while likes of Statesman suffers steady loss of readership & consequently advertisement . Industry some times bear the burnt of bad reporting , they can & should start recognising these facts & support the worthy. Then slowly things may look better & near ideal journalism can prove to be economically viable. But alas, it is a common knowledge that, when going gets good, industry also takes advantage of media to gain prominance & score on competetion. I feel pained to even discuss how our political system also has made it a practice to gain from crafty distortion in reporting. I ONLY HOPE THAT THIS SORT OF WRITING & WORD OF MOUTH ,WILL SOME DAY BE STRONG ENOUGH TO SET THE BALL ROLLING FOR NGOs TO START MOVEMENTS
4 Bhushan, Hyderabad on Nov-28 :

In wresting back the Taj Heritage Hotel, the Oberoi Trident, Nariman Building and other targets of terrorism from the terrorists, Indian soldiers and policemen from all over the country - Punjabis, Jats, Biharis, Sikhs, Marathas etc., have made the supreme sacrifice. Yes, this goes a long way in restoring the honor and dignity of the country, but more immediately, these brave personnel have died in the process of restoring the rightful place of "MUMBAI" as the economic hub of the nation. This is the time for the media to highlight this issue, employ itself innovatively to tell Mumbaikars that all Indians will come to their help in the hour of need - and that the likes of Raj Thakeray and his MNS are only divisive forces. This is the moment when a responsible media can finish off one more evil head (read Raj Thakeray and his outfit) that is rearing up purely out of selfish, personal motivation. The average Mumbaikar is intelligent and responsible. And he will assess for himself independently the way you project this isue. CNN-IBN, TIMES NOW, NDTV X 24 X 7 AND ALL THE OTHER NEWS CHANNELS - ARE YOU LISTENING?????? THIS IS A GREAT MOMENT, SEIZE IT AND SHOW THAT YOU ARE INDEED RESPONSIBLE. Bhushan
3 Abhay, Delhi on Nov-28 :

Yes it is a fact media is irresponsible and rather helping terrorists. Politicians are putting just drama in such a critical situation and blaming each other. I can just say, this attack must be taken as final alarm to come out from all irresponsible and procrastinating behaviour for the sake of this country and it"s people
2 Alok Raj, Secunderab on Nov-28 :

We require a couple of more Mumbais to shake us out of lethargy and culture of reaction. Its about time that we went proactive. Every entity must play its role responsibly, be it media, politicians, security forces or even public. Let us not blame media or govt alone. We are all responsible for our follies. The root cause of allowing Mumbais, Hyderabads, Jaipurs and other such serial blasts / terrorist attacks is ouir mindset that Government is responsible to take action, that what can I do. And my fellow Indians do not mind, we are very selfish. Only a handful of us will go beyond the call of duty and do something at the cost of own interest. Thats the reason why media , politicians, various security agencies and political parties keep trying One-up-man- ship every now and then. If we want thins to improve, it will take time, we will have to invest in our children. Inculcate patriotism, make them security conscious and above all bring them up as selfless citizens of our country. Yes, it is going to be time consuming exercise. But then that is the only way. The bottom line is clear your arc of fire first. So let us become more responsible, selfless and bring up our children also as responsible citizens.
1 KParthasarathi on Nov-28 :

A well written piece, the author has raised a pertinent point about the role of media while covering such tragedies like the terrorism in Mumbai and the possible need for self regulatory guidelines. She has also called for restraint by officials and politicians while giving information so as not to reveal our hand too much to the perpetrators of the crime.Accountability is another germane issue she has touched upon.We must learn from our mistakes and devise ways to prevent recurrence of such incidents elsewhere.
