Hindu Self Shaming
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: Often I hear my Hindu friends express how ashamed they are about being a Hindu when they come across some media report about Hindu religious or cultural customs which may not conform to their westernized logic. Or it may be news item of a communal incident in which Hindus are reported to have participated. Western media as well as the English media in India routinely portray Hinduism in stereotyped manner and have rarely shown objectivity in such reports. My friends do not bother to check the re.....read more in: Hindu Self Shaming

Totally agree with your post. Unfortunately we Hindus do not talk about our values that much - we take our kids to the temple, do some pujas and read or watch movies on the Ramayana & the Mahabharata.

I wish we Hindus would talk more about the great values that HInduism teaches. some of my thoughts:

1. The Buddha: Would anyone doubt that if the Buddha had been born in Europe or Muslim lands in the middle ages, he would have been branded a heretic and burned at the stake, dying a horrible death? His teaching consigned to the fire, to be lost forever! There would be no Buddhism today! And what do we Hindus do to the man who rejected Hinduism? Why, make him a God, of course! Imagine the greatness of a faith that saw divinity in a man who rejects it"s teachings!

2. Status of Women: Hinduism is the only major religion to pray to a female form of God, giving equal status to women! In most other religions women are treated as second-class, asking them to be subservient to their men. It is quite clear that these religions were regurgitating the prevailing view of their time, women were considered weak and inferior to men (200 years ago women couldn"t even vote!). How mind-boggling is that, Hinduism, born thousands of years earlier, is giving women equality! Truly divine inspiration at work here!

3. Purity and Virginity: Religions have been accused of teaching backward values. At one time Purity was associated with Virginity, Mary was pure because she was a Virgin. In the middle ages women were forced to wear chastity belts. But once again, a faith thousands of years older, made no connection between Purity and Virginity. Draupadi, married to 5 husbands, was called a Pativrata, the pure one. Savithri, who won her husband back from the arms of Yama, was also a Pativrata. Purity was based on character, not physical characteristics.

4. Talking about religions being out of step with present values - if you were a hiring manager and refused to hire someone because of their religion, in most countries you would be hauled into court and jailed! Yet some religions teach that their god does exactly the same thing! He runs heavens limited to members of his religion only! You could be a Mahatma Gandhi, Albert Einstein, but there is no room in his heaven for you. Hinduism teaches us that character matters! All good souls, regardless of religion are welcome in God Rama"s heaven!

5. These days we hear talk about Inter-faith dialogue. Modern societies strive to be secular, to give equal protection to all religions, the freedom to practice your religion of your choice without fear of repercussions. But has it been this way all the time? Go back 3 or 400 years, the situation was much different in most countries. People of minority religions faced persecution and even death. Christians ran away to the new world to escape persecution from fellow Christians! Parsees were hounded out of Iran! Bohras, Muslims, fled persecution from fellow muslims and found safe refuge in Hindu India! Now that bears some reflection, muslims fleeing persecution from fellow muslims, finding refuge in a Hindu country! How unusual is that? Hinduism is one of the few faiths that teaches its followers to respect all faiths. It teaches us that religions are like rivers, all flowing to the same ocean, God. It is not a coincidence that if you had gone back in time you would have seen Western and muslim lands barren except for one religion each, whereas Hindu India is a polyglot of hundreds of faiths!

6. Fear of God: Hindus who come in contact with other religions have come to hear these words, which are absent in Hinduism. How did this fear originate? It started with Primitive man. Living in caves more like animals, they would hear thunder and lightning from the dark clouds above, and would reason that the gods must be angry. Sure enough, in dry grass plains, fire and destruction followed, and in coastal areas, floods devastated entire villages. Hence, Fear of God! This fear has seeped into some religious teachings even today. But the amazing fact is that one of the oldest religions, Hinduism, far pre-dating some of the religions that came later, does not teach this fear of God! It teaches you to love and respect God, the very thought of God should bring a smile to your face not fear.

7. Science: christinity still struggles with the findings of Darwin, insisting that the earth is 5,000 years old, denying evolution. Hinduism teaches us that the earth is over 10 billion years old! Hinduism teaches us that Brahma, a metaphor for the Universe, has been born and died several times. Scientists now say that there could be several universes, some dying while new ones are being created. Again, how mind-boggling is it that a faith several thousands of years old, coming to the same conclusion!

8. Cults, in my opinion, are characterized b....

Further to my earlier feedback this morning, I am giving herewith the actual URLs where you can read some excellent write-ups on the two topics - Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and Sarva Dharma Sama bhaava.

This is a three-part article and I would request you to read all the three parts.

Dear Sri. Venkat Lakshminarayanan,

While the central theme of your article is appreciated - that Hindus should stop shaming themselves - the arguments that you have extended in support of this central theme are faulty. Vasudaiva Kutumbakam and Sarva Dharma Samabhaava are NOT the central tenets of Hinduism. Nowhere in the Vedas does one come across these two statements.

Vasudaiva Kutumbakam is actually encountered in Vishnu Sharma"s tales popularly known as Panchatantra Tales and here too, he uses this expression derisively to connote those who are foolish and stupid to think of the world as one family. It is embedded in tales where one makes friends with the wrong type of character and ends up in trouble.

The Sarva Dharma Samabhaava concept is also something that the Gandhis and Nehrus of secular India thrust upon the Hindu pathos, in an attempt to woo the minorities. There are some excellent articles on Sulekha that clearly state why "Sarva Dharma Samabhaava" actually degrades our claim to a unique identity.

I would like to invite you to my blog site at

http://vasudevan-raghavan.sulekha.com

All religions DO NOT preach and teach the same. All paths do not lead to the same mountain peak. We can discuss this deeper if you are willing to an exchange of ideas.

Best regards

Vasudevan

Truth Speaks on Jun-08 : Vid:Uma Bharati opposes women"s reservation bill [1 comments]

In my personal view, all kinds of quota together should not exceed 50%. Therefore 33% women"s quota is too much. It makes sense if the quota is limited to 12-15%. Also, women empowerment is best archived by where it matters most: girl child education, state women police and women lawyers. And also punish the girl child abortionists.

It is a fact. Vajpayee welcomed Mussaraf as a longlost son twice even after the invasion of Kargil. He sent buses and trains to Pakistan to build confidence for the killers and rapists. Advani went to the extreme and described Jinnah, the organiser of the mass murder in 1946-47 as a Secularist.
