2	030201kishankb on Jun-24 : AI has a staff of 31,000 and for an average family size of 5 that means up to 150,000 free travelers. Add to this an equally large, if not larger number of free loaders from Indian bureaucrats and politicians you will get a picture of why AI is a not a profitably operated or mismanaged business. Add to the unyielding attitude of its unionized employees that makes it to operate with highest ratio of staff per plane. Even with low wages, AI has bloated payroll as AI employees get very high benefits. Think of American car giants - GM and Chrysler - that are undergoing bankruptcy for reasons not unlike AI. Any company addicted to operating in red with periodic government bail outs is not going to last long.

Reality is that as long as GoI keeps bailing it out AI will continue to be economically at mercy of bureaucrats and politicians who drain its revenues by flying free not only themselves but also their immediate family members. In generals AI business class and first class passengers are mostly (80+%) are free loaders and on many flights even economy class is loaded with free loaders.
