Eastern India must not become a desert
India Forum: Comments, Opinion - Information Resource
News Summary: Just about a quarter of a century ago, in December 1985, I had disembarked at Palam Airport of New Delhi from a flight from London to board an Indian Airlines plane to Bhubaneswar, which is the capital of my state of Orissa, and also my hometown where my parents lived. The three hour long domestic flight was scheduled to depart around the mid-day with a stop over at Raipur in the state of Madhya Pradesh in central India. After an early morning fog the sky over New Delhi was all clear and a brigh.....read more in: Eastern India must not become a desert

Thanks to author Dr Nachiketa Das.

One of the redeeming aspects of a deteriorating forest situation
is a rejuvenation programme that would recreate the magic
of forests and water table - the author shows how by giving a few successful
examples.

There is no reason why India cannot become "sujalam, sasya
shamalam" all over again, as Bankim Chandra eloquently penned
in his immortal Vande Mataram.
6 S.Ghosh on Jun-29 :

If you travel from New Delhi or Bombay by train to Calcutta, until you reach Durgapur in enter West Bengal, it is only brown perched land, unfit for agriculture. Industry can have those land very well.
5 common sense on Jun-29 :

Growth of Indian population, and high paced industrialization would ensure that there won"t be land, green or otherwise, left to moan and groan about.
4 S.Ghosh on Jun-28 :

Eastern India became a desert since 1965 when Morarji Desai, Jagjivan Ram, etc came into power. They have destroyed all private sector industries by not giving any contracts, or any license-permits for imports, foreign exchange, or even production license. Public investments hardly went to Eastern India at all, except for these 3 steel plants.
The same policy continued since then. That is the reason Eastern India is so poor compare with the North, South or Western India.

Dear Sir
Thank you for your email extending support to my observations and analyses presented in my article entitled "Eastern India must not become a desert". I do my work of logically presenting my views, which are appreciated by some and are unacceptable to others. In my defence I quote Bhababhuti from the play Malati-Madahaba:
"Ye nama kechidiha na prathayantyabagyaam,
Jaanantu te kimapi taan prati naisa jatnah;
Utpatyate asti mama kopi samaanadharmaa,
Kaalo hyayam nirabadhi bipulaacha pruthvi."
Yours sincerely
Dr Nachiketa Das

I don"t understand why people are bashing at your article. What you said in the article is 100% correct, I have been thinking in these lines since long time. May be people are so ignorant and don"t want to see the truth.

Proud Hindu on Friday : We all must strongly denounce and condemn the violence and the gundagiri of the Shiv Sena and the MNS. Throw these bums out. They don"t represent me, a proud Hindu, in the least.
g kapuria on Friday : I strongly disagree. Secularists are the biggest threat to India. They shelter the fundamentalist muslims and christians. Secularist newsmedia do not report their misdeeds, which gives goondas like Bal and Raj Thackeray a platform.

Parks are a healthy addition to a town. The UP government needs to be commended for setting up parks in the state. Felling of trees is unfortunate, but there never is a free lunch.

Putting up so many statutes of party leaders and herself is tacky on the part of Mayawati, UP chief. These, still, gave jobs to a number of artisans, transport ....
