News Summary: On 14th October 2008, the Booker Committee announced in London that Aravind Adiga will get the Man Booker Prize for his debut novel, The White Tiger. The writer, Aravind Adiga claims in an interview:At a time, when India is going through great changes and ,with China, is likely to inherit the world from the West, it is important that writers like me try to highlight the brutal injustices of society, he said, adding that the criticism by writers like Flaubert, Balzac & Dickens in the 19th century.....read more in: Aravind Adiga: Intellectual bankruptcy of...

Hi,

Your views about the Araving Adiga"s book is to the point and good. I am one like you who is angry about author"s like him who project India as a country with have only slums, only crime, bad people and nothing more. From outside world these people make other countries feel that what they have written is true.

Thanks,
Rajesh

If you consider driving a car for your family / friends as being a chauffer, most of us do it day in day out. Krishna was not a "chauffeur" of Arjun ! He was his guide. Arjun listened to Krishna"s advise throughout the battle - not something most chauffeurs are used to !

Sexual depravity and cruel acts of Christian priests and nuns as recently highlighted across the world has proved that sexual deviance is not the preserve of any one religion. Sadhus are less prone to this as most do not have institutions to shield them from the wrath of the public.

The Caste system is a social issue and not a religious one. If indeed it were so intimately linked to Hinduism alone, converts to Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam and Christianity would not need to establish separate congregation for them. The fact that the church and the muslim org are asking for reservation of their "dalit" constituents speaks volumes.

Segregation based on work / job is something all societies practice - even now. Some maybe overt, some covert. Class divide is very similar to the caste divide in that respect. Education and opportunity is the only thing that can create a level playing field for all. India is well on its way to achieving that.

This is exactly the sort of thing that comes from convent education, where local culture (be it India, Africa, S.America) is disparaged and European world view is taught from a very young age.
Very good article and well thought out.

Only thing I will say is, India is the only country in the world to have survived 900 years of muslim and christian rule and still retained its original culture and religion.

Though wounded, we can survive and even "revive" if are willing to do something about it !

Sohan

You have made a dumb association b/w caste and class. And most malls here don" crib about appearance or shoes

The driver being the scapegoat is the rarest of the rare occurrences. Most private drivers are pathetic

Your cavalier judgment on caste is inane

Having not read the novel White Tiger, can"t say in what context the author of the book wrote what is described in this article. The best that can be said is the two - author of the book and the author of the article on the opposite side of the social and political divide.

Here are a few of my comments:

On the salient features of India: Buffalo price depends upon the milk yield of the buffalo, and age. Some owners may have to pay money to take these from their hands.

No shoes; no entrance in the malls. One can see these signs in many shops here in the US. In India, many shops require one to take off shows before one can enter the shop; the gate keeper makes sure that one does take off shoes.

No low caste man can enter an Indian mall. The poor has no means to buy high priced goods and so no desire to enter the mall; need no gate keeper to keep them off the premises. The poor of the poor are shoed away, a fact of life.

Low cast and their treatment. Most poor are low caste and being non- buying shoppers are not welcome. Even in the US, one can see posters in many shops declaring "No shoes, No shirt, and No service" and "Loiters are not welcome".

Drivers are the fall guy. The drivers take the blame in the hope they would be rewarded.

Magazine stall owners do carry "dirty" magazines. One has to ask.

Sadhus: Sadhus come in different garbs. Some could be among the worst criminals.

Indian caste system: the system is a curse; no denying about it. To compare the system with totalitarian police is being generous.

Lord Krishna and Kali: Lord Krishana played chauffeur for Arjan. Kali statute is awe inspiring.

Hanuman: Hanuman is a devotee of Lord Rama. For a Hindu devotee, to be called as Rama servant is a badge of honor. Rama is perfect man (Maryada Purshotam), so Hindus believe. They revere Hunuman because of his devotion for Rama. In the North, people worship Lord Rama and Sita. Laxman and Hanuman are revered. This is the distinction.

@ Ravi, Ghosh, Kemal and Pavan Ghatty

Thanks for your appreciation and thanks Pavan for the links you have given. They were very interesting and useful.

@ Azygos

Yes, I agree with a lot you say. His name doesn"t belong with the other ones like Arundhati. I took his name as I had to quote Naipaul.

@ Mayank Patel

Thank you for your careful comment. Yes, we have to recognize the masquerades. But Indian Secularism from its very inception has been nothing but anti-Hinduism and it has to be treated as such.

Very good message sir...i appreciate your findings, and some persons like me who were taking pride of such writers now understand the reality. Thanks for exposing this useless writer.
9 S.Ghosh on May-31 :

Come on you people. When your own country rewards Indians to insult their motherland, what do you expect from the British, who are encouraging these people.
The writer of Slumdog Millionnaire rather than getting sacked from the IFS for insulting his own country and culture is now promoted as the Consul General for India in Japan.

Dear Pankaj,
I wish I had more time at my disposal to write in detail how I feel about your article. For now it should suffice to say that I agree with practically every word in the article. I have similar views on Adiga and Naipaul (I wrote a small article on Naipaul after reading a few of his writings http://pavankghatty.blogspot.com/2009/04/vs-naipaul-is-very-much-indian.html).
Thanks for the article and keep writing,
Pavan Ghatty

A.Moron,
It is not difficult for these butchers to have a "forked" tongue. They say one thing and mean a completely different thing.
Take the case of the Harvard "Indologists". Here are the latest developments. Look at the langauge and behavior of the Harvard folks. Here is the link: http://sites.google.com/site/kalyan97/mlecchitavikalpa.

However, Macauley was a pro-Indian and promoted even the freedom of India in the House of Commons in 1835.

4 A.Moron on May-24 :

If any Indian insults India, he will gain a lot. Those who were anti-Indian during the British rule got the political power after the so-called independence. Due to these rewards many Indians are now joining the bandwagon of anti-Indian propaganda.

3 Azygos on May-23 :

Incisive and brilliant. However, the only drawback is including Nirad Chaudhari in the league of our extraordinary brown Macualites. Chaudhari was not a hypocrite, he openly expressed his admiration for the English civilization at the height of anti-colonial rhetoric. His perception of history was also unique and far more accurate than our modern day Herodotus"s. Last but not the least, Chaudhari"s English language writing skills were also impeccable.

2 F.Kemal on May-22 :

Pretty powerful comment - incisive, exposing the rotten underbelly of India intellectual life ...

"The crisis of India is not only political or economic. The larger crisis is of a wounded old civilization that has at last become aware of its inadequacies and is without the intellectual means to move ahead..."

The intellectual means is there within- but people are not looking. They are gazing at the mirages of glory, fame and wealth. Look within. Rediscover the scriptural wealth. Hindus need to be taught what Hinduism is. Yes, that ugly realty is pretty much on our face.
1 Mayank Patel on May-22 :

A brilliant and thought provoking article by pankaj. However, It suffers from a common drawback (i.e. labeling anti-hindu extremist as secularist) found in almost all articles.

What do we call a wolf wearing sheep-skin and masquerading as sheep? Wolf, Psudo-sheep or sheep?.
By calling him sheep we are indirectly buying in his propaganda and helping him in his murderous agenda.
By calling him pseudo-sheep we are gently nudging him in right path.
However, The time comes when we should realise that it"s not possible nudge this wolf in right path. So call it a wolf. Call them hindu-haters. Don"t call them secular or psuedo-secular.
